La Mere Layering Technique – Love from Italy

La Mere Layering Technique - Italy

Fashion Blogger Ilaria from Italy

This just in!

A fabulous blogger buddy of mine, Ilaria at My Way To Be Myself, showed up and showed out in her practicing my La Mere Layering Technique all the way from Italy!

See her thought about the process and pictures below.

  • Thoughts about La Mere Layering Technique:

“I consider this experience as a workshop, a way to communicate with the world, expressing ideas, watching people expressing theirs and learning from that.

Layering is often an underestimate aspect, as people easily think that a t-shirt and a sweater should be enough. It could be, but not always. I like when I can actually see what I’m wearing, so When I practice layering I decide giving relevance to details: the collar of shirt appearing from the sweatshirt or a funny tank under the blazer or cardigan.

In this case I chose the second option, homagin with an Alcott man t-shirt a great US President from the past, J.F.Kennedy, in a quite particular way 🙂 On the top a black cardigan, a black Zara quilted jacket and a scarf stolen from my boyfriend’s closet. To complete the outfit, an asimmetric skirt and a pair of Italian Oxford shoes. A total black with white, blue and red (colors of the US flag) details. It’s always all about details 😉

I really enjoyed this experience as layering means the possibility to play with clothes, colors and images, as fantasy could suggest. In my country, Italy, we need this stuff in winter, as it’s always quite cold.

Thanks to Janelle for this opportunity and I hope working again with her in future. Ilaria”

Enjoy her the slide show of all the pics she did for the demonstration:)

La Mere Layering Technique – Love from The Philippines

La Mere Layering Technique - Dianne Alejo 1

Fashion Blogger Dianne Alejo of Dianne’s Little Adventure

As I trudge along in the chilly weather of winter (I’m in the northeast in the US, but it’s a beautiful sunny day today!), I find myself absolutely addicted to my La Mere Layering Technique!

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while then you know, I love to ask fellow fashion bloggers to try out new things I’ve come up with.  Today, I’m receiving support from a blogger friend in The Philippines named Dianne of Dianne’s Little Adventure.  She was lovely enough to include a fabulous little write-up and pictures of her demonstrating my technique!

  • Here are her thoughts about the process:

“I find the whole layering thing quite interesting. I thought I won’t be able to pull it off, especially in a tropical country like the Philippines. Upon following the steps and trying to make it appropriate with our weather, I was able to layer clothes like a pro 😉 What I love about this is how I can customize the layers accordingly. I can mix-and-match the different layers and come up with different outfits.

Thanks for the La Mere Layering technique, Janelle. I really had fun with this technique.”

She was so kind to include many pictures, so I thought a slideshow was called for…enjoy!

La Mere Layering Technique – Love from L.A.

La Mere Layering Technique LA - Carmen ShuGar 1

Fashion Blogger: Carmen ShuGar of ShuGar Love

A few weeks ago I asked a wonderful fashion blogger buddie of mine, Mrs. ShuGar of ShuGar Love, to try out my La Mere Layering Technique.  With her most gracious acceptance of this fashion challenge she helped to prove two things:

1. This layering technique works well in any weather (she’s in L.A. so she would know!), and

2. The La Mere Layering Technique works well for every body type (she’s currently pregnant)

Since I’ve never been good with trying to re-write the feelings of others, I’ll just quote her directly:)

Check out her write up and pics below. Also click here to read her blog post about her experience Preggo Layering Fashion.

  • La Mere Layering Technique LA - Carmen ShuGar 2Layering technique:

“I am a fan of layering in the winter, but our L.A. winters are milder than most parts of the country.

Therefore, I layer with lighter clothing and mix patterns and colors. This allows for you to showcase the different items and add some spice to any outfit.  I usually wear a light sweater under, then a blouse over it, followed by a shorter blazer/sweater and either a hat and/or scarf. I pair this with shoes that don’t necessarily have the colors used in any of the clothing.  I shy away from matchy matchy!

I am enjoying combining maternity fashion with non-maternity clothes. It’s fun showcasing the bump! There’s a lot of cute belly-bump clothes and I think you can layer easily with the right blouses that provide support for the bump.”

La Mere Layering Technique Revisited

La Mere Layering Technique - Cassie Fairy in UK

Fashion Stylist Tip: Fellow fashion blogger, Cassie, tried my La Mere Layering Technique, and added stripped items for extra flair!

A few weeks ago a fashion blogger friend of my accepted a fun fashion challenge I had going on with the La Mere Layering Technique I created.

Cassie was kind enough to show how the technique worked in the frosty temperatures in the UK.  Her approach was simple.

  • “L” = Long.  Her longest layer was a long sleeve t-shirt.
  • “C” = Cropped. Her cropped or hip-length layer was a stripped pullover sweater.
  • “S” = Structured.  A fan vintage gray blazer finished the look to add that sophisticated touch.
  • “O” = Overlap. A stripped scarf was chosen for this.

“La Mere” Layering Technique ~ Step – by – Step Instructions (Version 1) – L,C,S,O

"La Mere" Layering Technique Step-by-Step

Step 1: Put on the “L” or longest and thinnest/sheerest top you will be layering. Remember this technique works best with thin layers!

La Mere Layering Technique - Step 2

Step 2: Now moving on to the “C” add the cropped layer of your look. For me, cropped means a shirt that stops at the hip.

La Mere Layering Technique - Step 3

Step 3: Introduce the “S” meaning structured component of your look. For this example I chose a cardigan with a print in the same colors as the “C” layer.

Step 4: Finish with the “O” which stands for either oversized or overlap. In this example, I went for overlap with a print silk neck scarf in the color palette of other elements of the outfit.

The Ultimate Layering Guide – The “La Mere” Layering Technique

"la mere" layering technique

This fashion-forward street style is what makes the “La Mere” Layering technique come alive!

Layering is a popular technique in fashion whereby a person will layer clothing one on top of the other.

That being said there’s definitely a right an wrong way to layer.  To keep from looking too bulky or unbalanced, I’ve come up with a quick and easy technique that will allow even the most novice fashionistas to layer effortlessly.

Like everything, you will improve with practice, but this will give you a starting point on how to layer and what to layer.

Below are the four components of the “La Mere” Layering Technique:

  • Part 1: “Long” – Long refers to the length of the first layer of clothing you have on.  In this case “long” refers to a shirt or tank top that hits below the hip.  Aim for something that hits mid-thigh.  Please note, the sleeves can also be long, but that’s not necessary.

Also in more advanced variations of the “La Mere” Layering Technique, you can tuck the shirt into a skirt or pant.  The length here is still important because it prevents bulk.  You also want to make sure this first layer is a light to medium weight fabric.

  • Part 2: “Cropped” – Cropped refers to the second layer in my “La Mere” Layering Technique where the shirt, jacket, or cardigan you choose will hit at the hip, cropped isn’t the best term but it’s shorter than saying “at the hip”:)  See the pic above to see a great example of Part 1 and Part 2.  The fabric for this layer can be lightweight to medium weight as well.
  • Part 3: “Oversized or Overlap” – The third part of the “La Mere” Layering Technique is the oversized or overlap layer. Here you want to add a cape, chunky scarf, or other medium to heavy weight item that ties the bottom three layers together.  This oversized layer must be in proportion with your shape so as not to overwhelm.  Another option is to also go for a piece that you would overlap, such as a scarf.

  • Part 4: “Structured” – In the this part, you want to add a jacket, blazer, or cardigan that has structure and preferably well-tailored.  The structure should complement both your body type and the theme of the look you’re going for.  For instance, if your look is preppy, a letterjacket with a insignia of a school or brand would be appropriate.  If you’re very daring, you can use a bolero jacket or some other unexpected but structured, tailored piece of clothing.

This is one of the most important part of the “La Mere” layering technique because this is where the shape of the wearer is best defined.  If you don’t want your layers voluminous or bulky, make sure to pick a great tailored jacket.  This jacket should be a medium weight fabric as well.

So are you game to try this technique?  If so drop me a line and let me see your results!
